10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects

outdoor spring cleaning

Spring cleaning isn’t fun for most of us. But it is important. As the winter end and we begin looking forward to spring, something within us pushes us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing and getting rid of things we’ve collected over the winter months.

But who says spring cleaning is only for the interior of your home?
The outside of your home could probably use a little tidying up after a cold, dreary winter, too!

It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning

Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will drastically improve the curb appeal of your home in Arlington, and, more importantly, will offer much-needed care and maintenance that will save money over the years to come.

1. Gutter Cleaning

Spring is the ideal time of year to clean out your gutters, because a lot of leaves and debris collect in the fall and winter months. Pollen is at its highest in the spring, making a mess in your gutters and downspouts if they aren’t cleaned.

Plus, pests and critters are searching for places to build homes in spring, so having your gutters cleaned out will help stop an infestation in your home.

Gutter cleaning consists of cleaning the inside and outside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew, rust stains and returning them to a nice appearance.

2. Window Cleaning

Home window cleaning is a must for spring cleaning. First floor windows will not give you too much of a problem, but any second and third floor windows can be a bit tougher to reach.

Cleaning windows by hand is a hard job, and will require a lot of tools, not to mention climbing up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your home’s windows is the recommended solution to get the panes and the outer frame clean.

3. Pressure Washing

You aren’t going to want clean gutters and windows on a dirty home. That means you are going to want to pressure wash your home too!

Pressure washing is fast, effective and doesn’t cost very much. You can pressure clean your home, outdoor furniture, patios, porches and walkways with not too much effort. It will remove dirt and mud so they will not permanently stain your home, and you can stop the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.

4. Driveway Cleaning

Clearing off your home’s driveway and giving it a deep cleaning might seem silly because you’ll still be driving on it, but, a clean, well-maintained driveway can increase the curb appeal of your home.

A professional pressure washer will do wonders when it comes to driveway cleaning, whether it’s pavement, asphalt, stone or another material. Also, consider adding a gravel border to your home’s driveway to really make it pop!

5. Patio Cleaning

Your home’s patio gets the most use during the summer months, so it’s easy to overlook it in the winter when you aren’t doing as much outdoor entertaining, leisure or grilling. Your patio could be in pretty rough shape the first time you go onto it in the spring.

Soap and water – and a little hard work – can sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if you notice signs of mold or algae, you might need to consider a more serious option, like power washing, to guarantee that friends and family can enjoy your patio all summer long.

6. Roof Cleaning

Algae and moss are common home roof problems in Arlington. While you are cleaning the outside of your home, it’s a great time to pressure clean your home’s roof as well, but you’ll need to use a different process than what you use for most of your home’s exterior.

If you start to notice streaks on your home’s roof, algae is most likely the cause. Moss is pretty obvious, too. These contaminants can’t be scrubbed off of shingles, nor can you pressure wash the roof of your home. Both of these methods will destroy the shingles on your home’s roof.

The best course of action for roof cleaning is to mist the shingles with a half-bleach, half-water solution and then let it sit. This mixture will kill all organic organisms on your home’s roof without reducing its lifespan.

7. Spruce up the Front

The front of your home is likely what most people see, so try to make the best impression you can for visitors and for yourself! Coming home to a well-maintained exterior will immediately improve your day, and will even motivate you to spend a lot more time outdoors.

Clean your front porch with detergent and water or a good pressure wash. Clean cobwebs and mud off of the front porch, and think about painting it a new color for a bright look! Clean forgotten areas including the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.

8. Organize Garden Tools

You will be spending more time outside, so spring is a great opportunity to organize everything you’ll need for outdoor chores.

Yard tools as well as pool care equipment need to all have a specific area outside your home – somewhere that it is safe from harsh weather and not in sight so it isn’t a constant eyesore to anyone. Spending the time to organize in the spring allows you to appreciate the outside of your home so much more throughout the time of year when you are going to spend the most time outdoors.

9. Lawn Care & Landscaping

Your lawn, trees and garden bushes can make a huge impact on the look of your home.

Eliminate weeds near your flower beds and walkways and driveway, till up areas where you will be planting in the future and sweep off walkways. You can spray pre-emergent weed killer to make lawn care easier on yourself throughout the next few months. Trim all the bushes too.

10. Clean the Grill

After being unused for months, your gas or charcoal grill could need a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food particles from your grill are definitely unappetizing, but even worse they can make you and your family ill.

Wet it down to get rid of leftover ash, then scrub the grates with a plastic scrubber (so you don’t leave behind particles that can get into food) and a basic detergent or degreaser.
